MAKE A DIFFERENCE! SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINER (SANE) PROGRAMSexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are registered nurses (R.N.) with advanced education and clinical
preparation in the forensic examination and evidence collection of sexual assault victims. SANEs deliver compassionate, coordinated, expert forensic and medical care to victims of sexual assault. SANEs also
coordinate with advocates to provide education and resource information to victims in crisis. GOALS The goals of a statewide SANE program include
- providing timely, compassionate, patient-centered care in a private setting that provides emotional support and reduces further trauma to the patient.
- providing standardized care of the patient who reports sexual assault, including assessment, evidence collection, and referral to indicated specialties/follow-up services as needed.
- maintaining the quality of collection, preservation, documentation, and custody of forensic evidence by utilization of a SANE to perform the exam.
- utilizing an inter-disciplinary approach to the investigation of sexual assault cases by collaborating with other service providers such as law enforcement, prosecution and advocacy to
comprehensively meet the needs of the sexual assault victim.
ELIGIBILITY The RI Board of Nursing has approved eligibility requirements as an RN with a minimum of three (3) years of
practice. All eligible nurses are encouraged to apply, although nurses with experience in women's health, emergency medicine, or psychiatry are preferred. All candidates must consistently demonstrate
compassion, critical thinking, and a commitment to fulfilling their obligations as SANEs. SANEs will be required to carry malpractice insurance, agree to take an average of 48 hours/month on-call
duty, and participate in the program for one year. SANEs are paid for their on-call time and performing the necessary exam ~ although it is passion and a commitment to the issue that makes a SANE! TRAINING
