Helpline Advocates are volunteers that provide support, information, referrals and safety planning to
victims at hospitals and police departments throughout Rhode Island. Helpline Advocates receive a 36-hour training that provides skills, knowledge, and confidence to enable you to work with victims of all ages.
There is particular need for volunteers who are bilingual and able to work with diverse populations. Today, the work of volunteer advocates is as important as ever. Quite often, we will hear from a survivor
that one of the turning points is when she/he first experienced and felt the support from an advocate, someone who listened, supported non-judgmentally, and reinforced that respect is a right of everyone.
Some of these things we take for granted in our daily lives, but for sexual abuse and domestic violence victims, reassurance provided in these areas are the very building blocks that can establish a foundation
for healing and for recovery. Your role as a volunteer, perhaps the first person to respond to a call for help, can launch someone on the road to becoming a survivor.
The Victims of Crime Helpline is a collaborative project between Day One and the Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center, on behalf of the six domestic violence agencies of the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
